It is already filling up fast with starts for this coming CSA and market season. This time we hired someone to make the gas connections so we know it's done right! We did all the rest: rented an excavator to trench in the water, electric, and gas lines, mounted 2 furnaces (gotta have a backup), installed electrical panel and wired outlets, fans and vent shutters, and wired the appropriate gadgets to the climate controller. We're turning the 20x48 high tunnel into the plant We're turning the 20x48 high tunnel into the plant nursery. Adding a water hydrant requires a 6ft deep trench that we dug with a rented excavator. There was still hand digging involved close to the building and utilities. In my head this was going to be a one day project, in reality it'll be closer to two. Tomorrow I'll get the gas line and electric conduit installed before back filling with the tractor. Then the weekend can commence!
Friday's and today's tomato harvest was about 1,00 Friday's and today's tomato harvest was about 1,000 pounds from 375 plants. We used all of the boxes today. The first fruit set is always the best, the hard part is keeping them productive til October. Last week we side dressed 20# N and 20# K per acre with feathermeal and sulfate of potash. Today we watered 1.5 gallons per acre of 2-4-3 fish through the drip tape. This will be at least a monthly thing based on the tissue analysis from @midwestlabs Although we are deficient on several traces like copper, manganese, and zinc there is nothing more we can do until we get the soils pH down which takes time. #hungryhungrytomatoes #hungryhungryhippo #farmfarm #mngrown #organic
This is a tine weeder rake from @twobadcatsllc Thi This is a tine weeder rake from @twobadcatsllc This is a type of rake that you drag over your beds when the weeds are super tiny while there are crops growing in them. Timing is super important because it will only work on tiny weeds, and your crop will have to be able to handle the light cultivation from the rake. We have been using it for potatoes, winter squash, and beans. They sell this tool with a handle, so we have 2 of them now. One still has it's handle, and the other one we rigged behind our tractor. 2020 was our first season with the 30x144 heated g 2020 was our first season with the 30x144 heated greenhouse, and this is the first year we are growing cherry tomatoes in it. They are looking pretty impressive so far and we should start to see some good harvests soon. We planted them every 18" in double rows (so 2 rows in a bed 1ft apart and plants every 3ft in the row) with each plant having 2 vines. The hard part will be keeping the fallen fruits off the ground which are like little packets of seeds. The two varieties are Sukura and Sun Peach, both greenhouse hybrids. #cherrycherrycherry #greenhousetomatoes

We were able to plant 1,200 asparagus crowns and 1 We were able to plant 1,200 asparagus crowns and 100 rhubarbs in-between some crazy ass rain and hail! After setting out all the crowns in the morning, we had like 7/10" of rain in like 2 seconds. And this was after a couple of massive rainfall events and a saturated ground. Our field is pretty flat, so we only had a few spots to straighten out, but it meant that me and the missus had to rake the trenches closed by hand in the evening when the water finally drained. #asparagus #asspeareyegus #farmfarm
Amending beds in the tunnels for planting this wee Amending beds in the tunnels for planting this week! We built 2 more caterpillar tunnels this winter so now we are up to 10,980 ft2 under cover, just over 1/4 acre. The down side to moving indoors is spreading compost with shovels and five gallon buckets for all that space. I'll use the power harrow with the two wheeled tractor to smooth the beds, but it's set so shallow that we call it a power rake instead. We try not to work the soil whenever possible because we love it. #soillife #soillove #notill
Tomatoes are in the ground! This year the greenhou Tomatoes are in the ground! This year the greenhouse tomatoes will mostly be Bigdena, a nice red slicer. About 20% will be Sakura and Sunpeach cherry tomatoes. The heirloom varieties will be transplanted mid May in unheated tunnels. We tried heirlooms in the big greenhouse for the past 2 seasons, and they can't make it through the long season because of leaf mold issues that the hybrids are bred to resist. #organictomatoes #greenhousetomatoes #greenhousegrowing #notill
In addition to compost and pelletized poultry manu In addition to compost and pelletized poultry manure, we also use other amendments for the chemistry side of soil fertility. This year we are using: elemental sulfur, gypsum, boron, manganese sulfate, copper sulfate, humic acid, and sodium bentonite. All organic approved! We mix them together on our driveway with a shovel to make applying everything easier. Brief description of soil fertility: Wizardry. If you don't draw a 'W' in the pile before mixing everything it won't work.
WE ARE HIRING!!! Farm Farm CSA is seeking 2 full WE ARE HIRING!!! Farm Farm CSA is seeking 2 full time employees (32-40+ hours a week) for the 2022 season. We are a 2 acre non certified organic vegetable CSA and market farm growing a diverse list of crops. The season begins in early to mid April, depending on weather, and ends at the end of October. Our small farm produces 200+ CSA boxes per week and we work 2 farmers markets on Saturdays. Employees will be involved in all aspects of vegetable production, and we treat all employees who are eager to learn as apprentices: we will share our knowledge and experience and take the time to train and explain. In addition to work that takes place on the farm, we will need one person to do our CSA deliveries from mid June until the end of October, and one person to work with us at one of the Saturday farmers markets. Employees must be punctual, hard working, have good attention to detail, a good attitude, and be self motivated. Typical work days are from 8am to 4:30pm with a break for lunch. We sometimes work outside these times to beat the weather (starting earlier on really hot days, or working later to beat stormy weather) Employees must be physically fit, able to carry 50lbs, able to bend down or kneel down all day long in all sorts of weather: 100 degrees and humid, 30 degrees with blowing snow. Compensation starts at $15/ hour and if you commit to 5 days a week we can offer $16/ hour. Please send us your most recent work history with contact info. We decided not to grow heirlooms in the heated house since they can't hold up to the diseases from a long season with reduced airflow (leaf mold). Aaaaaallll of the potatoes are harvested! We avera Aaaaaallll of the potatoes are harvested! We averaged about 200lbs per 100ft row this year, and some people think that's pretty cool. We invested in a potato digger which needless to say it is way better than digging with a garden fork. Using a potato digger is way better than using a garden fork. We named the digger Leonard since it's Italian, just like ninja turtles. Our walk behind tractor, also from the Old World is named Raphael, or Riff Raff for short. The Cub Cadet is Bodak Yellow, the old blue Chevy van is Murphy, and the new big van is Bertha Butt. I guess we haven't named our Kubota tractor yet.... Any suggestions?

No, we are not expecting frost yet (that's in 3 we No, we are not expecting frost yet (that's in 3 weeks) but we laid out some row cover after catching the flock of turkeys in the act of scratching out freshly germinated crops. Not the spinach! Anything but the spinach! The first picture is spinach seed that I soaked fo The first picture is spinach seed that I soaked for 4 to 5 hours in water in the fridge, then dumped onto a screen in an S shape to dry out before seeding. The second picture is evidence of a sassy over night turkey party in freshly germinated beds. I learned from other growers that soaking the spinach seeds for up to 12 hours before seeding improves germination. I'll do whatever it takes to get a fall crop to come up. According to my notes, the end of August is the last window to get an outdoor planting up to size before it's too late...which means trying to germ it in August when it can be too hot for it to work. So I soak the seed, seed it thick, and look for the stretches of 50s overnight, and keep it watered well! We will see if there is any more turkey damage tomorrow before putting row cover over those beds. There are 4 rows of electric fence to keep out deer, which has worked well this year! But it doesn't work on turkeys, wood chucks, voles, pocket gophers, or bunnies. Or insects. Or bacteria. Or hail... #ohgoshbygolly
